1950s - Space Race Begins

The 1950s space race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to explore outer space. The Soviet Union's launch of the first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957 sparked fear and concern in the United States, which led to increased investment in space exploration and the formation of NASA in 1958.

1969 - First Moon Landing

In 1969, the United States launched the Apollo 11 mission to land astronauts on the moon. The mission was made possible by the successful launch of a Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket was the largest and most powerful ever built at the time, standing over 363 feet tall. It paved the way for the historic lunar landing of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. later that year, marking a major milestone in human spaceflight.
